Weingut Lubentiushof - Gäns Riesling Alte Reben 2009
The winery is located in Niederfell, the German wine-growing region of Mosel. Found in 1711, when the former owners found no successor, the estate was taken over in 1994. Most of vineyards they are very steep with slate floors which can only be cultivated in pure manual work. There are 90% Riesling planted with consistently nearly natural viticulture practiced, for example without using of insecticides. Nevertheless, the fermentation is unusually slow in cooler temperature between 150 and 250 days and takes place with natural yeasts.
“Alte Reben” - literally meaning for Old Vine in Germany. Appearance was turned into golden color after certain years aged. Fragrance emanated from the glass there were deep, honeyed and reminiscent of a basket of ripe Williams pear, persimmon & candied citrus fruit. It turned into a clean palate with gentle acidity but not bone-dry, many well-organized layers topped up its complexity with a tight mineral backbone.
Definitely this is one of the great expression for high quality Riesling after well-aged. Powered up by those old vine up to 100 years old, I found what it surprised me most is aftertaste that just like a never-ending reverberation - a long long finish. It will be good to go with dried meat or smoked ham although I am so happy to finish it solo as well. Really good and will be tough to keep my hands off the remaining bottle. People, take your time and enjoy !
Staff internal blind tasting event on 9th March 2017, picked by our Cellar Master - Mr. Diego Rios and this is wine of the night for me.
